Dodge Momentum Index in January

After a 9% dip in January, the Dodge Momentum Index returned to growth in February showing continued optimism for construction activity to grow in 2024.  [ watch video ] , While total construction starts fell 27% in January, our Chief Economist, Richard Branch, says "January's decline in construction starts should not be taken as the beginning of a cyclical downturn in the industry".  [ watch video ] , The Dodge Momentum Index dipped in January, falling 8.4% to 201.5 (2000=100) from the revised December reading of 220.0. In January, the commercial component of the DMI fell 10.0%, and the institutional component receded 4.7%.  [ watch video ] , Manufacturing and infrastructure led the industry to a 27% rise in construction starts in December. In December, the commercial component of the DMI rose 8.4%, and the institutional component ticked up 2.7%.  [ watch video ] , Total construction starts fell 18% in November to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $926.3 billion, according to DCN.
